The third annual Art of Concern Symposium, Art on the Dark Side, explores the styles and themes of the gothic. Though typically identified with literary figures such as Edgar Allen Poe or Nathanial Hawthorne, the gothic has persistently "haunted" an optimistic notion of American culture. This year's symposium will explore manifestations of the gothic in twentieth-century art to better understand the complicated nature of our American experience.
